"Tolkien included many poems in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, said to have been spoken, recited, chanted, or sung by the participants in the story. Members of all races sang and created songs, improvised songs on the spot, modified words, wrote new words to old tunes - all processes of song-creation which occur in our world. Even though Tolkien did write new words to existing tunes - and sing them! - it appears that, for the most part, he did not follow these processes when writing the "songs" in his novels. All but two of his "songs" seem to have been written as literary poems, ascribed to his characters as songs but not actually written with tunes in mind. So if we want to sing them it will be up to "other hands" to compose the music."
